How to Pack Dishes When Moving

Glass and porcelain need extra care - a few simple steps significantly reduce the risk of damage.

Prepare materials in advance

Packing paper or bubble wrap will come in handy for packing dishes - both can be added as an add-on during booking (see the add-ons list). If you don't have extra materials, towels, newspaper, or clothes can also work as a protective layer.

Packing kitchen dishes into a moving box

Loading plates

  • Wrap each plate individually;
  • Pack plates vertically (on their edge), rather than stacked flat - this way they're more resistant to pressure;
  • Fill empty spaces in the box with soft material so the plates don't shift.

Glasses and glassware

  • Wrap each glass individually in paper or bubble wrap;
  • Put paper inside the glass too, if it's fragile;
  • Pack glasses in the top part of the box, not at the bottom under heavier items.

Kitchen appliances and larger items

Smaller kitchen utensils (knives, forks, spoons) can be packed together in one container or bag. For larger appliances (blenders, toasters), use their original packaging if you've kept it, or wrap them in a towel.

Don't overload boxes

Dishes are heavy - don't overfill a single box. It's better to use several less-full boxes, which are easier to move safely.

Labeling

Label boxes "Fragile" or "Dishes," so both you and anyone helping you move know these boxes need careful handling.
